Element here refers to Bhūta, or tattva. Bhūt means true, matter of fact, reality, (that which is or has been) existing, present, being or being like anything, consisting of, mixed or joined with. The word Tattv is comprised of two words, “Tat” (meaning “that”) and “Tvam” (meaning “thou”). Tattva basicially means “thatness”, that is, the real being of anything. It is generally translated as meaning “quality”. Further, “Tat” represents the Godhead and “Tvam” the individual, giving a meaning (which fits in well with Hermetic Philosophy) of “That (which is the Universe) art thou.” This is similar to the Hermetic axiom of “As above, so below”, and is directly related to the concepts of the Macrocosm (“Tat”, Godhead) and Microcosm (“Tvam”, individual).

From this very self (Param Atma) did space come into being; from space, air; from air, fire; from fire, the waters, from the waters, the earth;

Akash[edit | edit source]

Akash[edit | edit source]

Akash usually means sky, referring to the space.

Akasha (or Akash, आकाश) is the Sanskrit word meaning "aether" in both its elemental and metaphysical senses. Akash is the basis and essence of all things in the material world, bieng the first material element created in the Universe. This entire Universe exists in this ethereal space. The main characteristic of Akash is sound; it can only be heard. It is the substratum of the quality of sound. It is the One, Eternal, and All Pervading physical substance, which is imperceptible. It could be the sound created by all the vibrating matter

Vāyu[edit | edit source]

Atmosphere is the Gas/Air(Vayu) enveloping the earth. Air has two main characteristics: sound and touch; it can be heard and felt.

Agni[edit | edit source]

Agni means fire, and has three different aspects:

  • Pavaka, is the electricity (Lightning)
  • Pavamana, the fire produced by friction
  • Suchi, the solar fire (Plasma)

The earth's atmosphere is air compressed into the shape of a globe by reciprocal gravitational pull of atoms scattered all over. Due to friction between the atoms heat is generated and it pervades throughout the universe. These fragmented atoms when converged or compressed become charged with heat and light due to friction and spears out into all directions. This is why, when clouds converges more and more, it bursts out into pieces while emiting light and energy. This phenomenon leads to the formation of a star, including our Sun. The thermonuclear reaction is the source of heat and light generated by the sun

Agni has three characteristics: sound, touch, and shape; it can be heard, felt and seen.

āpa[edit | edit source]

Apa, known as water is a vital element for all living beings.

Water has four characteristics: sound, touch, shape and taste

Prithvi[edit | edit source]
