Online protest has various forms, with increasing frustration for the target and higher risk for the activist.
Online Petition[edit | edit source]
Online petition is a non-violent protest where thousands of people sign up to show their frustration. It is also the least likely to be taken note of, unless it gets media attention.
Online Mass Mail[edit | edit source]
e-Mail bomb[edit | edit source]
an e-Mail bomb is a form of protest where a huge number of people send emails to an address in an attempt to overflow the mailbox or overwhelm the server where the email address is hosted.
Informative Mass Mail[edit | edit source]
Informative Mass Mail is where a few people send bulk emails to inform the community of an injustice.
Online Blockade (mass Ping)[edit | edit source]
In the old days people used to "sit in" on the road, in front of a factory or building to protest something about it.
In the digital era, this has taken the form of thousands of people continously Pinging internet servers.
- ping www.OnlineAddress.com -t
When thousands of people run this on their computers at the same time, the "online address" becomes inaccessible due to the online traffic congestion. This is called a "Mass Ping Protest", also known as a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.
Warning: There is a risk of arrest and jail for the "blockade of traffic" to an online server.
